6 less than the difference of a number x and 8
= -6 + (x-8)
x-8-6
= x-14 = a number minus 14
although some argue "the difference of x and 8" could really mean the absolute value of their difference so it also means -6+ (8-x) = 2-x = 2 minus a number x
on the former view
answer is x-14
on latter view
answer is x-14 or 2-x
