2x + x + 6 = 48. Then, Combine like terms, to get

3x +6 = 48. Isolate the term containing the variable by subtracting 6 from both sides in order to keep the equation balanced. 3x +6 - 6 = 48 - 6 Simplify to get 3x = 42. Then,

Divide both sides by 3 to get x= 14 (Brothers age)

So 2 x 14 =28 and 28 + 6 = 34 which is Erin's age.

Erin's age = 2x + 6

Younger brother's age = x

2x + 6 + x = 48

3x + 6 = 48

3x = 42

x = 14

2(14) + 6 = 28 + 6 = 34

Erin is 34 years old and her younger brother is 14 years old.
