My question is a disabled sailboat is drifting on a current that is moving at 5 miles per hour. Fortunately it’s drifting towards a coast guard station 17 miles away, which picks up the distress call and send a rescue craft directly towards the sailboat. The rescue craft can travel 34 miles per hour. How long will it be before the 2 vessels meet?

17/(34-5) = 17/29 = more than half an hour

= about 0.66th part of an hour

= 17/29 x.(60) min = about 35 minutes to meet

in half an hour coast guard will go 34/2 = 17 miles

in half an hour boat drifts 1/2(1/12) = 1/24 of a mile
