Taught high school Algebra I & II three years and SAT MATH PREP 2 yrs
Four more than the product of a number and 9 is 3.
Let N = the number
"Four more than" translates to "+4"
"the product of a number and 9" translates to "9N"
"Four more than the product of a number and 9" translates to "9N + 4"
"is 3" translates to "= 3"
Putting it all together:
9N + 4 = 3
And, if you wanted to solve for N:
9N + 4 - 4 = 3 - 4 Subtracting 4 from both sides.
9N = - 1
9N/9 = - 1/9 Dividing both sides by 9.
N = - (1/9)
CHECKING:
Does 9N + 4 = 3?
(9)(-1/9) + 4 = -1 + 4 = 3 Yes.
Hope this helps you Grecia.
