Hi Abhinav,
Let's translate the English into math . . .
Let X = the number of females
"there are 8 more males than females" means that the number of males = X + 8
So the total number of students = X + X + 8 = 2X + 8
"3/5 of the students are males" so (3/5) (2X + 8) = X + 8
Distribute the fraction over what's inside the parentheses: 6X/5 + 24/5 = X + 8
Subtract X from both sides and subtract 24/5 from both sides: 6X/5 - X = 8 - 24/5
Multiply X and 8 by 5/5 so everything has a common denominator: 6X/5 - 5X/5 = 40/5 - 24/5
Subtract the like terms: X/5 = 16/5
X = 16 = the number of females
16 + 8 = 24 = number of males
Total number of students = 16 + 24 = 40
Plug the numbers back into the original English to make sure they work.
