Let first number = x
Let second number = y
 
x+y = 14
x-y = 2
 
Add the system of equations.
 
2x = 16
 x= 8
 
Substitute into equation 1.
 
x+y=14
8+y=14
y=6
 
Check the solutions by using equation 2.
 
x-y=2
8-6=2
2=2
 
This checks out.
