Simplifying Exponents

(x^1/2 y) ^3 The terms are all in parenthesis and the exponent lies outside.

-----------

(y^1/2)

y^3 x^3/2 x^3/2

------------- I am told the answer is: ----------

y^3/2 y^3/2

I am confused as to where the y^3 went from the numerator.

Then the correct answer is x^(3/2) y^(3/2) = (xy)^(3/2).

And I agree they "lost" the y^3 in the numerator when they gave you the wrong answer.
