A rectangular room is 2 times as long as it is wide, and it’s perimeter is 36 meters. Find the dimension of the room

P = 2L + 2W

We are given that P=36 and the length is 2W, so substitute.

36 = 2(2W) + 2W

36 = 4W + 2W

36 = 6W

6 = W

Plug that back into the perimeter formula

36 = 2L + 2(6)

36 = 2L + 12

24 = 2L

12 = L

Check it.

36 = 2(12) + 2(6)

36 = 24 + 12

36 = 36

Length is 12 and width is 6. ■
