Bill can hit a bucket of 323 golf balls in 17 hours. How many golf balls can Bill hit in 23 hours?

I need help solving this problem. Im not sure how too. please help :)

Hi Bill,

 

This is a ratio problem.  The ratio of ball hit per period of time.  The ratios are equal for various periods of time.

 

So:

 

323 golf balls hit    =          X        

     17 hours                  23 hours

 

multiplying both sides by 23 hours we get

 

X = 323 * 23/17 golf balls hit

 

X = 437 golf balls hit

There are a lot of ways to solve it.

 

One way is:  Calculate his rate.  323 golf balls in 17 hours is 323 / 17 balls per hour = 19 balls per hour.

 

So now use that to figure out how many balls he'll hit in 23 hours:  19 * 23 = 437
