Another way to look at it is with some simple variables!
We know we have 2 pieces of thread that was cut from 78 inches of thread.
Let's say that "L" represents the length of the smaller piece. We know that the larger piece is twice the length/size of so that 2 * L or 2L. Since they came from the same original piece of thread, we know that their lengths together is 78 inches.
Now we have our equation L + 2L = 78 inches --> Since the variables are the same, we can combine them together, so our new equation is 3L = 78 inches.
To find what L equals, we divide 78 by 3 and get 26 inches being the length of the smaller piece.
We plug in that value of L into 2L to find what the bigger piece is --> 2(26) and get 52.
To check our answer, we can add 26 and 52 together, and we end up with 78, our original number!
