First, do not try and read the whole chapter word for word. Doing this is stressful, and sometimes impossible. Read the 1st and Last lines of each paragraph... that’s usually where the most important info is located. Highlight as little as possible, this allows you to come back to the page and focus on what was most important...hence reading the 1st and last lines of the paragraph. Focus on all italicized, bold, and listed content. Really focus on the boxes. Boxes usually have info that has been discussed on the page and also content that is worth remembering. Lastly, get a good study guide. This simplifies content and saves a lot of time. I recommend Saunders comprehensive NCLEX review. Good luck!

If it is possible it is best to read over what you are studying. However, many times the amount of reading that is expected is unreasonable. If this is the case, review lecture slides or handouts prior to lecture. Take good notes during lecture. Afterwards, for whatever material is not clear, go back to the textbook and read that section. You might also supplement your learning with tutorials which can be found on the internet.

The techniques for studying nursing textbooks are not much different than the techniques used to study any other subject's textbooks. Generally it is best to read through the entire assigned/relevant section. Take notes, then revisit the text again with your notes later for a more focused session where you drill down on the important topics or areas that you are weakest in. I personally found it helpful to study as a group. Although I am not usually a group study person, studying in a group helps you stay on task and gives you other people to bounce ideas off of if you get stuck.04/12/20
