In order to answer this, we need to do a couple of steps. First, we need to turn 1 1/4 into an improper fraction and then we need to set up common denominators.
Improper Fractions:
1 = 4/4, so 1 and 1/4 is equivalent to 5/4
Common Denominators:
A common multiple between our denominators is 8, so we need to set our common denominator as 8.
5/4 becomes 10/8 (since we multiply the numerator and denominator by 2) and then 3/8 can stay the same.
10/8 - 3/8 = 7/8 (subtract across)
So, 1 1/4 is 7/8 longer than 3/8. Hope this helps!!
