Not sure of your actual question here, but if you are looking for the numeric version it would be 3x-1=7.
If you want to solve for x you have to get x alone on one side of the equation. To do so follow the next steps:
3x-1=7
3x-1+1=7+1 (-1+1 cancels itself out)
3x=8
x/3=8/3
x=8/3
