Batch of cookie help

Mr Smith had enough sugar to make 3/4 of a batch of cookies. To make a whole batch he needed one 1/3 cup of sugar. How many cups of sugar did Mr Smith have?

He needs 1/3 cup for 1 batch.

But he only had enough for 3/4 of a batch.

Therefore he had 3/4 * 1/3 = 3/12 = 1/4 cup

Another way is to set up the proportion ratio:

we do not know how much he has, but it is enough to make 3/4 batch.

If he has 1/3 cup, he can make 1 batch.

batch 3/4 1

cross multiplies: ? = 3/4 * 1/3 = 1/4
