seeing that this is elementary math we won't use variables

use guess and check because the sum is so small

10/2=5

5+5 doesn't work, 5-5=0

4+6 doesn't work because 6-4=2

3+7 works because 7+3=10 and 7-3=4

3 and 7 are the numbers

Make a table. The only numbers that can go in the table are numbers that add to 10.

9|1 9+1=10 but 9-1 is 8 and we need 4

8|2 8+2=10 but 8-2 is 6

7|3 7+3=10 and 7-3 is 4

Note: I started with the larger number first because when subtracting, you needed a positive 4. It helps organize your work.
