There are actually many ways to say thank you in Korean! When you want to be polite, you can either say 감사합니다 or 고맙습니다. The (으)ㅂ니다 form is a way to express respect and formality to the one you are speaking to. If you want to say thank you to a friend, you can say 고마워(요). The 요 form is also polite, but less formal. If you and your friend are the same age, you dont need any polite form so you can just say 고마워!

The best way is 감사합니다. 고맙습니다 also works.
Remember, Korean has several levels of formality. So, with your peers or younger siblings, you may use the informal 고마워요 or 고맙다.
It's better to be overly formal with the language than talk down to your senior or someone in a higher position.

There are different levels of honoring system in Korean language.
They depend on who you talk to - usually by ages, or social status.
The casual form is shorter than honorific expressions.
You can use casual form to your friends or someone younger than you, or your family member depends on the family culture.
You use conversational polite form to someone at your age or younger politely.
For someone older than you, you use formal conversational form.
Thank you in Casual form: 고마워 [goh-mah-wuh]
Conversational Polite form: 고마워요 [goh-mah-wuh-yoh]
More formal Conversational form: 고맙습니다 [goh-mahp-sseum-nih-dah]
Formal both Conversational and Written Form: 감사합니다 [gahm-sah-hahm-nih-dah]
