The Cooking Club

The Cooking Club made some pies to sell during lunch to raise money for a field trip. The cafeteria helped by donating two pies to the club. Each pie was then cut into four pieces and sold. There were a total of 36 pieces to sell. How many pies did the club make?

36 pieces divided by 4 will give you the total number of pies.

Subtract the two pies donated by the cafeteria, and you’ll have your answer.

You can also do it the other way around: The cafeteria donated 2 pies, times four piece each.

Subtract those pieces rom the total of 36 and divide that answer by 4.

Working it out two ways is always a good way to check your work and your understanding.

This problem can be solved using the equation:

(p+2)*4=36

p+2= 9

p= 7

Another way to solve it is applying a backward reasoning:

If we have 36 pieces, that means that we have 9 pies. If 2 the pies were donated by the cafeteria, then 7 pies were made by the club.
