As an elementary school teacher I always like to think of math problems in pictures. Visualizing the problem will allow you to assess the reasonableness of your answer.
Mr Moran last year: 60kg
Mr Moran this year: 2/5 MORE (Your answer will be greater than 60)
Next we can create an equation to guide our problem solving: 60 + (2/5 more) = X
What is 2/5 more or what is 2/5 of 60? Think of the word "of" as multiplication.
2/5 x 60 = 120/5 (2x60=120, the denominator, 5 stays the same)
120/5 = 24 (120 divided by 5 is 24)
2/5 of 60 = 24
We might be tempted to stop here and say that he weighs 24kg but because we visualized the problem we know he weighs MORE than 60kg, which brings us to the last step.
60+24=84
*Teacher Tip: Always end your answer in a complete sentence!
Mr. Moran weighs 84kg this year.
