Question

Two jets leave Denver at 9:00 A.M., one flying east at a speed 50 km/h greater than the other, which is traveling west. At 11:00 A.M. the planes are 2500 km apart. What are their speeds?

Answer 1

2500/2 = 1250 kph = combined speed = 2x +50

2x = 1200 kph

x = 600 kph for slower plane

x+50 = 650 kph for faster plane

in 2 hours, slower plane goes 2x600 = 1200 km

in 2 hours faster plane goes 2x650 = 1300

add 1200+1300= 2500 km
