Using W for the unknown number, we can write the difference of the number and 2 as : (W-2)
Then "twice the difference" would be represented by : 2 (W-2)
Lastly, "is 6" can be represented by: =6
Combining these expressions gives us the following equation: 2 (w-2) = 6
You can solve for W by using inverses operations:
2(W-2 ) = 6
2(W-2)/2 = 6/2
W - 2 = 3
W - 2 + 2 =3 + 2
W = 5
