De jure (from the Latin) segregation is the separation of groups of people based upon a written and published law enacted by a legislative authority. It is the "law of the land" (whether it is determined to be right or wrong). De facto (also from the Latin) segregation is the separation of groups of people based upon the facts or the circumstances of the situation. De facto segregation typically occurs based upon practice and not upon the law.
