asked 12/06/19(H+2)*h=20, so what is h.
I know through trial and error h=3.5825 - but want to know how to work it our logically, I can simplify to h= √(20-2h)

If H is the same as h, you should use the same symbol. I assume you meant to to say
(h + 2)h = 20
h2 + 2h = 20
h2 + 2h - 20 = 0
Now solve for h using the quadratic formula.
a = 1
b = 2
c = -20
h = [-b ± √(b2 - 4ac)] / (2a)
Plug in the numbers and get
h ≅ 3.5826
h ≅ -5.5826

Yes - for H i meant h - changed by Auto correct. Thanks for the guidance - but i don’t get how you assign 1 to a, 2 to b - and then oi’ve never seen the quad equation you cite. Is that a standard? Many Thanks 🙂12/10/19

Yes, it is standard. Once you have the quadratic equation in standard form (ax^2 + bx + c = 0), the coefficient of x^2 is 1, the coefficient of x is 2, and the constant is -20. Then plug these values into the quadratic formula to get the roots.12/11/19

If the coefficients were such that you could factor the equation without using the quadratic formula, the solution is easier. But in this particular problem, you need to use the quadratic formula.12/11/19
