A cash register contains only five dollar and ten dollar bills. It contains twice as many five's as ten's and the total amount of money in the cash register is 620 dollars. How many ten's are in the cash register?

Two trucks head toward each other from opposite ends of a freeway 402 kilometers long. If the speed of the first truck is 68 kilometers per hour and the speed of the second truck is 66 kilometers per hour, how long will it take before the trucks pass each other?

Jim has gotten scores of 98 and 88 on his first two tests. What score must he get on his third test to keep an average of 99 or greater?
Please can you help with this one too?

Matt H.

Sure.

To have a 99 average after 3 tests, you need to have scored a total of 3 x 99 points, which is 297. So far he has 98 + 88, which is 186. To get from 186 to 297, our boy has to get 111 points on the 3rd test.

Hope there's extra credit!

Three times a number decreased by six is between -30 and 57
Has to be in interval form.

I think I did that one on another one of these threads, but it's quick so here you go. They want you to say that 3n - 6 falls between - 30 and 57, so it looks like this:

- 30 < (3n -6) < 50. (Literally "negative 30 is less than 3n-6, which is less than 50.")

Hey, did you get an answer for the Carrie-on-a-road-trip-with-traffic one. I have to admit, I STINK at those and am having a major brain gap on it...

A car rental company offers two plans for renting a car.
Plan A: 30 dollars per day and 11 cents per mile
Plan B: 50 dollars per day with free unlimited mileage
For what range of miles will plan B save you money?

I am having trouble on this one too.

Yeah for some reason I can never get a handle on those, but there are a couple of tutors on here who just nail them, so one will probably post something overnight.
It's after midnight here in NY and I am about 400 years old :-) , so I'm going to bed--I'll try to crack that one if I'm up early in the morning, so maybe you can slip it in before school. Glad I could help you out on a bunch of them--that's why we're here!
Cheers,
Matt

ok one more--the car rental.

Plan A is the better deal until the 11 cents a mile takes you over 20 extra dollars, which would make A cost more than 50, which is more than B.

So how many miles will cost you 20 added bucks if 1 mile costs you 11 cents. (Remember, 20 bucks is 2000 cents...) So 2000 divided by 11 is... 181.8 miles.

So if you are going to drive more than 181.8 miles, go for Plan B. And stop for coffee. :-)
