Let's let b represent the number of blue marbles and r represent the number of red marbles.
Since we know that they are 9 times as many red as there are blue, we can write:
r = 9*b
Also, since he had 2288 more red marbles than blue, we can write:
r = 2288 + b
Since we have two expressions for r, we can set them equal to each other and find the number of blue marbles:
9 * b = 2288 + b
Subtract b from both sides of teh equation:
9b -b = 2288 + b - b
Then:
8b = 2288
Divide both sides of the equation by 8:
8b/8 = 2288/8
b = 286 blue marbles
r = 9 *b OR 9 * 286
r = 2574 red marbles
