Change the % into a decimal (shift decimal to the left two place values) and then multiply.
35% = 0.35
0.35x40 = 14

That is 100% the answer so there must be a mistake. Are you doing something online? Sometimes there can be errors with online math programs.12/03/19

I double-checked. The answer is 14. Another way to think about it is 10% of 40 is 4 (10x 4 = 40) You can add 4 three times 4+4+4 =12. Then the 5 in 35 means half of 10%, or 2. 12+2= 14. (This is how I figure out how much to tip the pizza delivery guy!)12/03/19

To Find 35% of 40, you could find 1% of 40 which is
40/100 = 0.4
(This is because if 40 is 100%, then 1% is 0.4)
Then multiply 0.4 by 35 to find 35%
0.4* 35 = 14
Therefore 14 is 35% of 400.

35% means 35/100. The derivation? "per cent" means "per hundred". So 35 per cent means 35 per hundred.
Regardless, 35% of 40 is simply (35/100) * 40
