The sum of two numbers is 15 and their difference is 3. What are the two numbers?

2 unknowns requires 2 equations:


"The sum of two numbers is 15"

x + y = 15


"their difference is 3"

x - y = 3


Add the 2 equations, and the y term drops out, allowing you to solve for x. Then use either equation to get y.
