We want a function which outputs the number of circles (the dependent variable) when we input the number of pentagons (the independent variable). Let's call this function c(p), where c is the number of circles and p is the number of pentagons. Now, how do we calculate the number of circles given the number of pentagons? Well, we need to divide the number of pentagons by 7 (giving us the number of groups of 7 pentagons) and then multiply that result by 4 (since each set of 7 pentagons gives us 4 circles). Alternatively, you could think of it as getting 4/7 of a single circle for each pentagon. So our function should be c(p) = (p/7)*4 = (4/7)*p. You can easily test this function to ensure that it outputs the correct result for 7, 14, 21, etc. pentagons.
