We can start by letting x represent the first number.
Then the second number can be represented by 2 x + 5 because twice x means multiply by 2 and 5 more than means add 5
Since the sum of the two numbers is 80, we can write the following equation and solve it to find the missing numbers: first number plus second number = 80
Then: x + 2x + 5 = 80
Now combine like terms and use inverse operations to determine the value of x (or the first number):
x + 2x + 5 = 80
3x + 5 = 80
3x + 5 - 5 = 80 - 5
3x =75
3x/3 = 75/3
x = 25 So the first number is 25
The second will be 2x + 5 or 2 *25 + 5= 50 + 5 or 55
The second number is 55.
Their sum is indeed 80 (i.e.25 + 55 = 80)
