Write an equation for a line perpendicular to y = 4 x − 2 and passing through the point (-4,5)
The equation is in the slope-intercept format, so we know that m = 4.
A line perpendicular will have a slope that is the negative reciprocal: -1/4
Using this slope and the given point, find the new equation:
y = mx + b <<standard format>>
plug in m, y, an x:
5 = -1/4 * (-4) + b
Solve for b:
5 = 1 + b
b = 4
So....the new line is:
y = -1/4 * x + 4
CHECK by plotting the original line and the new one.....
