Prior to the internet, all software was written to run on a single machine with a single operator. With the advent of networking(starting with the humble VT connected via a serial or parallel port) we added time sharing and then with darpanet we added the ability to send jobs to remote systems.
Now we have the cloud and services like AWS/Azure that allow almost unlimited access to computing power. This potential has unlocked a whole new world of computing where we can solves massive problems in an instant thru parallel computing methodologies that were pure theory 20 years ago.
