You can certainly get started in GIS without a degree. I began my professional career as a GIS professional when I was a student as an intern. You can also gain real-life experience in GIS through volunteer work. For example, one of the coolest examples I heard about was a person who offered to create a GIS database for a cemetery. They were then able to generate a web based map to help families find their loved ones. Think about the field you want work in using GIS and start looking for opportunities!
