Ffirst change the mixed number to an improper fraction by multiplying the denominator of your fraction and the whole number then add it to the numerator and place the answer over your denominator.
4 1/2 becomes 9/2
3 1/2 becomes 7/2
Then multiply straight across both fractions.
9/2 x 7/2 = 63/4
Next, change your improper fraction back to a mixed number by dividing 63 and 4 as even as possible which will become your whole number and the remainder will become your numerator over the denominator (4).
4 goes into 63 evenly 15 times which gives us 60. The remainder is 3 and our denominator is still 4.
Your mixed number and answer looks like this: 15 3/4.
