What is the best way to "treat" longitude/latitude features in a machine learning predictive model?

Geohash is a good alternative since it can put lat/lon format in a single unique format. Geohash is available as a python module and can convert coordinates quickly. One of my co-workers is using PostGreSQL database for machine learning since it is a robust spatial database, and very extensible.
