There are limitless possibilities for GIS projects. Anything that occurs in time and space can be represented in a GIS project, large or small. Depending on your skill and timelines, you can find a project in an area that interests you, such as time savings for delivery drivers only making right turns, mapping urbanization in your area, mapping potholes in your town, mapping changes in crime rates, or using remote sensing to examine changes in landcover. There are numerous free resources available from USGS and EUSA online that usually require simple user registration. Many cities, counties, and universities host GIS data and services as well. The best thing to do is pick a topic that interests you, and then create a map or series of maps over time depicting that topic. Web-based story maps are a good way to do this as well.
