To rewrite this expression with parentheses you want to use PEMDAS, also known as the order of operations. It is the order you should solve the pieces of the problem, or in your case, write the problem. I went ahead and crossed out the ones you won't need:
P - Parentheses
E - Exponents
M - Multiplication
D - Division
A- Addition
S - Subtraction
So, in your equation we have multiplication, addition, and subtraction. First we want to put the parentheses around the Multiplication.
9+16-(2*4)
Then, you want to put parentheses around the addition:
(9+16)-(2*4)
Since the only thing you have left is the - sign, you don't need to add any more parentheses. Solve the problem in the same order (PEMDAS) .... multiply, then add, then subtract.
Equation: (9+16)-(2*4)
Step 1: (9+16)-(8)
Step 2: (25)-(8)
Answer: =17

9 + 16 - 2 X 4 = 17 (as written would actually equal 17 because order of operations requires multiplication first, then addition and subtraction left to right).
9 + 16 - 8 = 17
25 - 8 = 17
Using parenthesis, however, we can group the numbers to make it work as well.
9 + 16 - 2 X 4 = 17
(9 + 16) - 2 X 4 = 17
25 - 8 = 17
