I wonder if this question is designed to have the reader understand that there is no possible way to answer it based on the given information. Sometimes students will just look at a quantity (2 or 4) and assume that 4 of anything is more than 2 of anything. However, since we don't know the weight of the apples or bananas, we have no way to figure out which is heavier. If the bananas are each 1/3 lb and the apples are 1/2 a lb each, the bananas will weigh more. If the bananas are 1/4 lb and the apples are 1/2 a lb, they'll weigh an equal amount. If the bananas are 1/5 lb and the apples are 1/2 lb, the apples will weigh more. Of course, it could be that each apple and banana weights a different amount, too!
