We are wanting to DIVIDE Daisy's entire hike into 1/8 mile long segments. So we will just divide 4 3/8 by 1/8. To make it a litle easier, I'm going to turn 4 3/8 into an improper fraction:
4 3/8 = 35 /8
35/8 ÷ 1/8 When we divide by a ffraction, we flip the second fraction and multiply:
35/8 * 8/1 = 35
So our answer is 35.

To make a mixed number into an improper fraction, you multiply the bottom number of the fraction times the whole number and then add the top number:
4 3/8 = 4*8+3 = 35
The bottom number of the fraction stays the same:
35/8
