The problem tells us that the entire distance is 6 miles.
And we know that the first part of the trip, from home to the BallField is 2 miles. The unknown is the distance from the field to school, so I called that x.
I would write this: 2 + x = 6
The two parts on the left are the two parts of his trip; first from home to the field and then from the field to school. The 6 is the entire trip. To solve this, we need to subtract 2 from both sides. The solution is x = 4 miles.
