What is the difference between a raster and a vector in GIS?

Raster data is made up of pixels (also referred to as grid cells). Vector data is not made up of a grid of pixels but rather made up of vertices and paths.

Generally speaking, Raster data is the basemap and Vector data are lines, points, or polygons.
