You can treat this question as assigning the "owing money" with a negative (-) sign and assigning "paying back" with a positive (+) sign. Therefore, owing $35, i.e. -35 and paying back $25, or +$25 yields the following:
-35 + 25 = -10
Therefore, you still owe $10 because the result is negative (-) and we established that a negative symbol indicates owing money.
