it takes half an hour for arlene to reach school when walking very fast. it takes her an extra one-third of an hour if she walks at her normal pace. What fraction of an hour does Arlene take walking at her normal pace?

Well here we have to understand that half an hour is 30 minutes, or 1/2 as a fraction. Then, we see that it takes an EXTRA 1/3 of an hour when walking normally. This is in addition to the 30 minutes. So, we have:

30 minutes = 1/2 of an hour.

1/3 of an hour = how many minutes? - 20 minutes.

So all together we have 50 minutes when walking at a normal pace. So what fraction of an hour is 50 minutes out of 60 minutes? 50/60, or 5/6.
