How come we can build desktop computers but not laptops?

Laptop computers can not be custom build because laptops are very small/compact devices that need to save on space. So generally they are assembled in a highly efficient way and the components are fixed.

Computer desktops on the other hand have a lot of space and its easy for an individual to assembly/disassemble the components in a desktop.
