When I started UX/UI design years ago, the standard was to set your designs to 1240px width. When we were designing emails, the width of the artboard was 640px. However, web design has changed a lot in the last few years. All web designers should have a mobile-first way of thinking. With the majority of web use being of mobile devices, we should really start with how we would like the website to work on mobile.
Mobile first design and human-centered design should be the first place a front-end designer's mind goes. The smallest screen (as of 2019) that your design may be on is roughly 320px. So when we are designing for web, we are not only designing for the 27 inch iMac but also the phones that are 320px. This is all about how our website will respond to these screen sizes. However, to do mobile-first designing you have to understand responsive design of websites. Basically, it is how the elements of the website responds to the shrinking screens.
If you are not designing with mobile-first in mind, you can do two things. First, I highly suggest using Adobe XD or Sketch for your UX/UI designs. These programs have presets for web design. If you do not have these programs, you can start with an artboard that is 1920x1080px.
