You do not start with the 95 because you need to find out how many sticks of gum he gave away before you can figure out how many he has left.
You can begin by figuring out how many pieces of gum he gave away if he gave one piece of gum to each student which would be 22. If he gave away two pieces each that would be 44 which is 22+22. Three each would be 66 which is 22+22+22. Four each would be 88 which is 22+22+22+22. Instead of repeated addition, one could also get to this part of the problem by multiplying 22x4 which is also 88. Since Shawn gave away 88 pieces of gum, 95 minus 88 leaves him with 7 pieces
