What are free RS-232 terminal programs?

Question

I've read signals from an AVR in university, but I forgot what software I was using. I can't seem to find any on Google. Maybe I am not looking right. What are some free UART software for AVRs? I know there is HyperTerminal but it doesn't work well on Windows 8 - I think.

A great RS-232 terminal I use at work a lot is Putty. The baud rate(normally 9600) and port have to be set correctly, but after that initial hurdle, I find that it works very well!
