a recycling company gives you 5 cents for every plastic bottle and 10 cents for every glass bottle. from a certain individual the recycling company received 59 bottles and paid $4.55. How many glass bottles did the individuals recycle?

Hi Bob,

Let P = the number of plastic bottles and G the number of glass bottles.

Then we know P + G = 59, which also means that P = 59 - G.

We also know that .05P + .10G = 4.55. We can replace P with 59 - G:

.05(59 - G) + .10G = 4.55

2.95 - .05G + .10G = 4.55

2.95 + .05G = 4.55

.05G = 1.60

G = 32
