What is unit would you use to express the length of your mom's car?
Please take some time to think about your answer to this question and about the "guidelines" that you used for selecting it.
Let's start with some units that likely would not be used and why. "Miles" doesn't fit well because the car is only a small fraction of a mile in length. An even worse possibility is "light-years." Then, "fathom" (used for depth of water) doesn't fit well because this is not water. . . .
So, "not appropriate" is a consideration. The unit we select should allow the length of the car to be expressed in an understandable number value.
The unit we select should also allow for the length to be expressed precisely. That is, for example, "to the nearest foot" if we are trying to determine whether it will fit into a parking space or onto the bed of a tow truck. Although "yards" and "inches" and "centimeters" can be used, the length of the two truck bed is in "feet" so we would want to compare units to units (you know, like "comparing apples to apples").
Here is a quote about the length of American cars:
"The average lengths of compact sedans and compact sport utility vehicles in America are 177.2 inches and 172.3 inches, respectively."
