Metric measurements can be tricky, but I can share some tricks to out smart them. :-)
The key with all metric units is to learn the "base units" and prefixes.
Base units= liter (liquid) gram (weight) meter (distance) Those are like starting points.
The prefixes tell you what to do or how many of the base units.
For example, "kilo" = 1000, so a kilogram is 1000 grams, kilometer = 1000 meters
'centi"= 1/100 (Think cent like one cent/penny is 1/100 of a dollar. )
1 meter = 100 centimeters OR 1 cm is 1/100 of a meter
"milli"= 1/1000 (like a millipede bug with 1000 legs)
The BEST thing about the metric system is you can switch between units just by moving decimals since all of them are multiples of 10. Count the zeros to get the # of digits to move. Ex: change from meters to centimeters, move the decimal two places right. (Much easier than multiplying by 12 or 16 or 8!!!)
Make a study chart of the prefixes and units. Happy studying! :-)

Hello Katie.
The biggest piece of advice I can give about measurement is like this...
If you want to change a bigger measure to a smaller measure, you have to multiply....
The opposite is also true; if you want to change a smaller measure to a bigger, you have to divide;
EX. 1 foot > 1 inch and 1 foot = 12 inches
So then the problem is 51 inches = ?? feet and ??? inches left over ????
We have inches, and wish to change it to bigger feet.. so smaller to bigger...
so we must divide 51 / 12 = 4 remainder 3; so 4 feet 3 inches
