two cyclists travel in opposite direction .one travel at 6 mph faster than the other.in 2 hour they are 24 miles apart.what is the speed of faster cycle?

Let x  = rate of the slower cyclist.  So, x + 6 = rate of the other cyclist.  

 

Distance = (rate)(time)

 

In two hours,

Distance of first cyclist + Distance of second cyclist = 24 

 

So, 2x + 2(x + 6) = 24

4x + 12 = 24

4x = 12

x = 3

 

Speed of faster cyclist = x + 6 = 9 MPH
