The minimum number of socks Andrew must take out in order to have a matching pair is 3. Andrew could pull out two socks that are both white, both black, or one of each. If he pulls out two socks that are both white or both black, then he has a pair. However, if he pulls out one of each, then he is required to pull out a third sock. This sock could be either white or black but will ultimately result in a matching pair.
